Boys V. Girls

It's crazy how different The Boy is from The Girl. Toddler E sits and sits and colors and slowly threads tiny beads onto a wire. Butters lasted a few minutes and crushed paper then piled them on his cars. It reminds me how much kids are different from each other, and therefore parenting styles, but also how fundamentally how different boys and girls are. It start very early-competition, mothering, details, organization. My sample size is very small, but I see glaring differences already. The thing to remember is, that the difference doesn't make one better than the other. Women see things differently from men. Men see things different from women. Doesn't make it wrong or right. Just different.

In the history of our country, we've had 110 supreme court justices and 106 of them have been white men. One hundred and six. White guys. Men who never birthed a child, never let their emotions get the best of them, men who don't know what it's like to feel the way over half of this country feels. Men who don't realize how easy it is to be a white man. It's time for some differences in opinion, don't you think?

You know, Megs, I always remember the year that I spent teaching kindergarten Sunday School a couple of years ago. The kids were old enough to self-segregate by gender. The boys sat at one table, the girls at the other. We'd always start the class with a picture for them to color and a bunch of markers out on the tables. The girls would all bend over their work quietly, meticulously filling in the pictures, politely asking each other for the markers they needed. The boys would stack the markers on top of each other (you know how Crayolas snap together) and turn them into swords while crumpling up the paper into balls that became bombs. If they did actually color, it was always to make some part of someone's body red, to indicate how he'd been wounded in a brutal and bloodly battle. All these kids were about 5. That always sums up the difference between boys and girls for me.

When you and your sisters were young, I'd display a worm on my palm and all three of you would freak out. Tried the same thing with great nephew number one and it took him all of two seconds to smack my palm and crush the worm. Love my four great nephews and enjoy playing sports, war and watching wheels go round with them, but am going to absolutely love playing (non-violent) with Ms. E.
